Novel Idea... a MENU!

Thinking of ways to save money, I decided to make a menu and then go shopping once for all the meals during the week. I know, it is not a very original idea and people have been doing this for ages, but it is new for me! Before I would go to the store and decide there what I wanted to make. Inevitably this would lead to more trips to the store later on because I forgot something... and who goes to the store and doesn't see something else that looks good too? So this last week I spent 25 dollars on lunch/dinner food and I have plenty of stuff left over! I love that feeling. The only thing is coming up with meals that sound good before I go shopping. Any ideas?

  1. Look in the family cookbook at the things you like. The big problem is you will have to feed all the cast members or cut the recipe in 1/4 usually. There are some recipe places on line that might tickle your fancy. Exchange recipes with people at work. Isn't it fun when you get to grow up and discover new things? Proud of you.

  2. It doesn't work. If you tell me today that I have to have something tomorrow, I'll spend all day tomorrow thinking of all the other stuff I would rather have. It's just the way we work. My advice is to go to the store and buy everything that you could imagine eating at any given time of the day. That way you've alwasy got something that you are in the mood for. You're welcome.

  3. Haha! If you have extras just put them in individual freezer bags and freeze it. Do you have a freezer? Chicken and pesto is delicious too. Or plain couscous, it's super cheap, and then you add chicken bouillon or some other flavor and you can eat it as a side with anything. Whole wheat pitas are super good too, or get like romaine lettuce and cut it up yourself and put it in a ziplock bag for the fridge. It's quick to make a salad and it's delicious with a few wheat thins smashed in. You're welcome!

  4. I can send you some recipes later on tonight. I have a couple on my blog that you may like. I love having a menu. Even if you don't make what was on the menu for that night, you can switch and make something else becase you hae all the ingredients. I usually only end up cooking 4-5 times a week because we have leftovers on our busy nights. Also invest in freezer bags :)

  5. Thank you everyone! Including you Aaron.... I would love to look in the family cookbook, but between college, home, college, home, college, mission, college, home, college, home, boise, home, Florida... It has become MIA.

  6. Marissa and I have made Beckie's taco soup a couple times. Freezes well too and lasts awhile. I like the couscous Marissa said. I like it with some Prego three cheese sauce mixed in too with some cut up chicken. Mexican rice is super easy to make. The recipe Selene gave me makes quite a bit so you could have left overs of it for a few days too and it still tastes awesome.

  7. Menus are lifesavers - without one, I spend way to much time standing in the pantry staring at the shelves trying to decide what to do. If you are searching for a recipe based on a particular ingredient, go to recipezaar.
